Election 2024: Republican candidate Q&A for Oregon House District 12 with Conrad, Harbick

Wood floors, exposed ducts and garage-style doors keep things casual at Q House, where eager diners dig in to family-style dishes. Chef Christopher Lin shares his Taiwanese heritage on this broad Chinese menu with modern Sichuan leanings. Pick and choose from small and large dishes, all designed for sharing.

However you decide to experience it, don’t miss the remarkable zig-zag staircase, a joyous element that adds a bit of fun to the perfection of the house. The house was built in 1921 to be offices and dressing rooms for Irvin Willat’s film studio in Culver City. In 1926 it was moved to its current location and became a private residence.

Skid Row Housing Trust developed the project in partnership with Abode Communities and Snyder Langston. Ownership of the house remained with the Lane family until 1955. In 1963 the home became The Magic Castle, home to the Academy of Magical Arts. If you ever have the chance to step inside this spectacular place please do not hesitate to do so.

Restaurant review: Q House’s modern Chinese…

I recommend stopping by for at least a quick visit if you can. Some of the houses are famous because of the architecture while others are famous for being used in movies and tv shows. There are so many different ways that we are spoiled in Southern California but the incredible variety of homes that we can visit is truly something special. Please note that not all of the homes on this list are open to the public but I will make sure to specify which ones are available for you to visit vs which ones you can drive by.

Lin and his team’s skills come through in a variety of dishes that showcase the diversity of Chinese cuisine. Some are flavor punches of spice and garlic, while others are more nuanced. Yes, diners will find mentions of General Tso’s and spare ribs and wontons, but there’s so much more to Q House than those familiar names. It’s worth taking the time to explore it all, over many visits. O’Donnell on Thursday marked 30 years with NBC News, a tenure that has included covering four presidential administrations, seven election cycles and numerous major events, including embedding with troops in Iraq.

If you were Jewish in the sixties in Los Angeles, it seemed almost mandatory that your family have a favorite Chinese restaurant. In that area, loyalties were divided between Wan-Q and a place a few blocks east on Pico named Kowloon, which is also now long gone. There were other Chinese eateries along that stretch of Pico but somehow, even local newspaper reporters sensed the great Wan-Q/Kowloon rivalry and wrote of it.

This home and park have such a wonderful variety of activities for visitors. You can tour the home (during non-covid times), go horseback riding, hiking, attend movie nights over the summer, and polo games. Will Rogers was a popular actor in the early days of Hollywood. In the 1920’s he bought land in Santa Monica and his 359 acres included some land that would later become part of Pacific Palisades.

Welcome to the New Joshua House!

It is called the research house because it was built with a loan from a patron. A fire destroyed most of the house in 1963 and was rebuilt by Neutra’s son with the Dad’s oversight. I have not been able to confirm if the grounds are still open to the public during COVID 19. The Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills feels like the perfect home to kick off this list with.

Driven by purpose and faith, LACHC delivers God’s love, in particular to those from traditionally under-served communities across Los Angeles County. In 2020 LACHC’s staff of 170 cared for more than 11,000 patients who received nearly 36,000 medical examinations, over 5,000 dental visits, and over 12,000 mental health sessions. True to their mission, at LACHC no one is denied assistance due to a lack of insurance or finances.

It also relies on an effective landlord whose duty it is to ensure properties are safe and habitable. Your new flat was neither, and L&Q appears to have failed dismally. My wife, the daughter of a Windrush émigré, is a long-term social housing tenant with L&Q. Since we plan for her elderly parents to move in with us, we applied to swap her two-bedroom flat for a three-bedroom one via housing association L&Q’s mutual exchange scheme. The property we chose was in a poor state of repair, but had potential. It took 18 months for the exchange to complete, during which time we were required to fill out forms confirming the condition of our property and our relationship with our neighbours, as did the other tenant who confirmed all was in order.

Of all the homes on this list, this is the only one so far that will give you beautiful views of the ocean. It has been called the Taj Mahal of Tile and I absolutely love that the house features locally made tile! The house was built in 1929 as a vacation home for the Adamson family but eventually became their fulltime residence. After the death of the owners, the state won a lawsuit to put beach parking where the house is.

Live wires dangled from the walls, the plaster was rotten and the ceilings near collapse. It transpired the previous tenant had illegally let it as a house of multiple occupancy. L&Q told us to put in a works request, then proceeded to ignore us. The Trump administration held that transgender students were not protected under federal laws, including after the Bostock ruling. Our menu features 28 days of wet-aged USDA Prime steaks cooked in a 1,500-degree broiler served sizzling hot with clarified butter on plates heated to 450 degrees. At Mastro's we have an array of the freshest seafood selections, like our 2-foot-tall seafood tower of chilled crab legs, shrimp and oysters served over a cloud of dry-ice.

This is the oldest standing residence in the city, built by wealthy cattle rancher Francisco Avila, whose extensive 4,439-acre land grant covered much of Beverly Hills and the Miracle Mile district. Though visitors only see about half of the original house, it’s well-preserved with an interesting mix of Spanish, Mission and ranchero influences. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love. Robinson’s department store when they started living in this mansion.

I hope that by sharing my adventures I am able to help you discover new and exciting places in LA. This house was created by Frank Gehry for him and his family in 1978. He changed an existing house and turned it into something truly unique.

We were Wan-Q people but once, just to be fair-minded, we dined at Kowloon and confirmed our hunch that it was inferior. Wan-Q was a terrific Chinese restaurant located on Pico Boulevard, just east of Robertson, in the building that now houses another terrific Chinese restaurant called Fu’s Palace. Unlike Wan-Q, Fu’s Palace is not a dark place full of tropical decor and little streams and waterfalls that run through the room. I took some of my first dates to Wan-Q because it seemed to be that kind of place, but its main clientele was local Jewish families. The dining room is anchored by a massive Wendell Castle table set beneath an Ayala Serfaty light fixture that hovers like a luminous cloud. Jones had originally planned the house with the children’s bedrooms, family area, and kitchen on one side of the 7,500-square-foot structure, and the primary bedroom suite on the opposite side.

‘Infested’ Review – One of the Best Spiders Attack Horror Movies in Years

House on Haunted Hill is the kind of horror movie that’s not a bit scary and quite a bit gross. This room is another part of the asylum where Vannacutt's staff performed electrotherapy on patients. It has two head harnesses which electrocute the patients when activated. This compartment is one of the parts of the asylum where the staff performed electrotherapy on patients. All three deleted scenes from the film were included on the 2000 Warner Bros.

However, during the revolt, Vannacutt was able to activate the mechanism which sealed the iron gates on all the asylum's doors and windows, thereby trapping the escaped inmates and him and his staff. A fire started in the sealed, chaotic asylum, and all of the staff and inmates were killed, except for five of Vannacutt's staff. The Baphomet Idol forced the souls of all the dead staff and inmates, including Dr. Vannacutt, who died in the building to remain trapped in the house and to do Baphomet's bidding by trapping and killing nearly anyone else who entered the facility.

After he was corrupted by the Idol, throughout the early 20th century, Vannacutt began performing gruesome and torturous experiments and medical procedures on the patients. When The Darkness confronts Eddie about his ancestor's actions, Eddie screams that he was actually adopted. Pritchett's ghost then appears and opens the iron gate, and Eddie escapes. As Sara and Eddie sit in exhaustion over the night's events, they notice an envelope halfway through the gate.

Hearing a scream, Lance and David find Annabelle's corpse, suspended to suggest she hanged herself, but the absence of a perch immediately arouses suspicions of murder. Nora confronts Lance and tells him an unseen assailant strangled her and left her for dead. He tells her to remain out of sight so that her attacker will still think she is dead. Lance and David propose that everyone stay in their rooms and shoot anyone who enters to survive the night. Thus the innocents will have no reason to leave their rooms (and a good reason to stay inside them) and the killer must stay put or admit guilt. House on Haunted Hill is a sorry reincarnation of the 1950s William Castle horror film.

House on Haunted Hill marked the producing debut of Dark Castle Entertainment, a production company that went on to produce numerous other horror films, including additional remakes. Castle eschews standard Gothic, and uses Frank Lloyd Wright’s superb Ennis House, 2607 Glendower Avenue, a Mayan-temple influenced structure built of pre-cast concrete blocks. After the release of the movie, it was nightly besieged by bozos, hurling bottles. Every mission in California is said to be haunted, but only one has ghost cats! The lore goes that Father Francisco Uria kept four pet cats whom he loved so much that when he died, the “four cats solemnly marched to the chapel.

House on Haunted Hill (1999 film)

The film is set in an abandoned asylum, the Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane, where numerous murders were committed in the past, mainly the 1920s. The head of the facility, Dr. Richard B. Vannacutt (Jeffrey Combs), performed grotesque experiments and medical procedures on the patients, killing many in the process. The hospital was closed in 1931 after the patients escaped from their cells, killing almost the entire staff (all except five) and burning the hospital. All the patients died, their souls rumored to be trapped there forever.

For the campy 1999 remake, the amusement park was largely a model, based on a real park in Orlando, Florida. It’s the art deco frontage of the Griffith Observatory, 2800 East Observatory Road in Griffith Park, Los Angeles (previously a major location for Rebel Without a Cause). There have been reports of ghosts in several areas of City Hall; the most famous is a nattily-dressed, old-fashioned gentleman who likes to disrupt City Council meetings and bother officials in the bathrooms.

Two major studios have released it on home video in remastered versions. Warner Home Video released the film on DVD as a tie-in to the release of the 1999 remake. The color version was released on DVD the same year by 20th Century Fox. Extras prepared by Legend Films for the Fox DVD release included an audio commentary track by comedian Michael J. Nelson of Mystery Science Theater 3000, two versions of the trailer, and a slideshow of images from the film's original press book. The poster for the film included an illustration of a house in yet a third style, that of a fanciful four-story Romanesque structure. This room is a rotted chamber filled with the rotted remains of many of the asylum's patients.

Produced by Robert Zemeckis and Joel Silver, it is a remake of the 1959 film of the same title directed by William Castle, and features special effects by famed make-up artists Gregory Nicotero and Dick Smith. Millionaire Frederick Loren (Vincent Price) holds an all-night party in the supposedly haunted house cared for by jittery Watson Pritchard (Elisha Cook Jr), in William Castle’s classic gimmicky schlocker. After Nora, Watson, and Ruth release Lance from the secret room, Nora tells them that she shot Frederick. When they arrive in the cellar, Frederick explains that he loaded her gun with blanks, that his wife and David plotted to kill him, and that they both met their ends in the vat of acid.

Upstairs, Pritchett, Eddie and Sara are trying to open one of the iron gates on the windows when they hear Price's screams from down the hall. Pritchett investigates, and The Darkness kills him while Price temporarily evades it. He figures that the only way to get out is to go to the attic and try to escape through there. Price runs ahead of them to find an escape route while Sara and Eddie stay behind. House on Haunted Hill marks the producing debut of Dark Castle Entertainment, a production company that went on to produce Thirteen Ghosts and House of Wax, two films which were also remakes.

The Roosevelt competes with the Knickerbocker for most celebrity hauntings. Marilyn Monroe supposedly appears in a full-length mirror from Suite 1200, where she stayed when she first started becoming famous; Montgomery Clift is said to hang out in and around room 928, where he lived while shooting From Here to Eternity. One psychic says he’s also detected Humphrey Bogart, Carmen Miranda, and Betty Grable. There’s also a cold spot in the Blossom Room (the first home of the Oscars), near where a dapperly-dressed ’30s-era man is said to hang around. Of course, the Ennis House also makes appearances in non-haunted roles—an animated version was even created for an episode of South Park.

Watson remains convinced the house is haunted, with David and Annabelle now added to its ranks of ghosts, and that he will be the next victim. The Psychiatric Institute has a lockdown mechanism which was installed by Dr. Vannacutt when the facility was an asylum to stop patients from escaping. After the original asylum was destroyed in the 1931 revolt, the lockdown mechanism was never disabled as the ghosts stopped the reconstruction attempts made over the years before the workers could disable the lockdown. After the incident at the former institute with Steven Price's party, the facility was left abandoned again. Eight years after Price's party at the asylum, Dr. Richard Hammer and his assistant Kyle arrived at the building to search it for the Baphomet Idol. Art dealer Desmond Niles and his team also came to the facility for the Idol, with a hostage Paul and Ariel Wolfe.

In a black-and-white post-credits scene, the spirits of the 1931 patients are seen torturing the Prices forever in the afterlife, presumably doomed to eternal damnation.

In 1931, the patients at the Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane revolt with a prison riot against the staff, headed by the sadistic Dr. Richard B. Vannacutt. The patients start a fire which engulfs the building, killing all of the inmates and all but five of Vannacutt’s staff. Several ghosts supposedly haunt the bridge, including possibly a worker who fell into the concrete during construction. Griffith Park is all kinds of haunted, dating back supposedly to the nineteenth century, when owner Don Antonio Feliz left the land to one Don Antonio Coronel instead of to his niece, Dona Petronilla Feliz.

Maintaining a design system in Figma by Lukas Oppermann UX Collective

design tokens

Consolidating design decisions is a critical, but difficult, part of creating semantic tokens. At this level, we can define the semantic tokens more broadly to reduce the number of tokens needed, making the system easier to maintain and evolve as we continue scaling. The best way to figure out what model works for your teams is to start from a simple system and evolve it based on the feedback and needs of the product teams who use the design system. Gall’s law is important to reflect on and something we believe to be a core guiding principle for successful design systems.

Talk to us about getting your product or platform to market faster.

And at Zeta’s DS for web enterprise products, we’ve embraced the power of design tokens since its inception. Merge components have the same fidelity and functionality as those in the repository. The design system team can use React props (or Args for our Storybook integration) to restrict changes or provide designers with the flexibility to make design decisions.

JSON file the only source of truth and you get a consistent design on all platforms. We use the open-source Figma Tokens plugin (aka Tokens Studio for Figma) to create the tokens. Which are then imported in Figma as styles and exported to GitHub as JSON (the plugin auto-converts the tokens to JSON). From GitHub, the tokens JSON is parsed via Style Dictionary with a couple of native and an in-house transformer to create CSS variables.

For more on how our spacing system, and how to use space in your designs, see our spacing foundation. There are dedicated color tokens for text, links, icons, backgrounds, borders, blankets, charts, and skeleton loaders. Use these examples to get a better understanding of how different tokens work. Every tone value between 0 and 100 expresses the amount of light present in color. The 100 tone is always 100% white, the lightest tone in the range; the 0 tone is 100% black, the darkest tone in the range. However, you can use a different logic, as long as others will understand it too.

These comprehensive guides will help you to better make a selection of framework, as well as they will make the integration process as smooth as possible. Another huge advantage of tokens is their ability to efficiently create various visual styles. Understand how to use design tokens when applying our foundations in your designs.

Please note that all projects are relying on the same shared resources like data, themes and design tokens of course. Check out the intro article before diving in one of the guides. Design tokens are the perfect tool for coordinating colors in your design systems, but they might seem puzzling to some designers. If you want to create functional and practical design systems, you must familiarize yourself with a highly beneficial concept called design tokens. It gives the designers the long-awaited responsibility and the control to define the actual styles that go in the developed products — while being in their natural habitat of Figma.

Victor, Colorado---Eddy & Post---Good for 10Cent in Trade-----

Now to make it all work designers, developers, and team leaders have to come to an agreement on what design elements should be tokens, how they will be used, and how they will be named. How this works in practice is different every time, but requires collaborative discussion on the path to success. The key to design tokens is that they facilitate cross-disciplinary collaboration. More people on a team can understand and use design values without specificity, but with accuracy. In a post from earlier this year, Pavel Laptev shows us how to make these design tokens in Figma and, by using their API, abstract those values out of design mockups and use them in a codebase.

If teams need to add platform-specific properties, they simply update the design token. Design tokens are most beneficial for creating a single source of truth–which is what drove Salesforce to start using them. Everyone must speak the same design language when multiple product teams, engineers, and UX designers work on the same product. Designers should use design tokens to create more consistent implementation of work when it goes to development. Tokens also help manage and maintain design decisions through deployment and ensure that every instance of the design is consistent. Design tokens make the language between designers, developers, and product engineers a little bit easier to understand.

design tokens

Or, if you are comfortable coding, use the .json tab and bulk edit all the tokens. The solution is to use abstract names based on tonal values and then combine them with semantic, component-specific tokens (remember the cat above 😅). When the standard is published, it will allow other tools to communicate in the same “language.” Imagine taking colors from the Figma Tokens plugin and plugging them into Adobe Illustrator or Pitch. 😅If you want to learn more about the standard, you can visit the Official Design Tokens Community Group. No matter what, we need a standard if we want to adopt design tokens in multiple apps.

If we wanted to create a design token for a primary active button using this structure, it might look like color_background_button_primary_active or perhaps shortened color-bg-btn-primary-active. This token will contain every type of color code necessary for cross-platform implementation. In a 2014 article published in Salesforce Designer, Salesforce UX VP Sönke Rohde described how the company uses design tokens to apply the same design principles across multiple platforms and software. Instead of using these static properties, designers and engineers reference a token like “uxpin.cta.primary,” representing all four color codes. The color will always be the same regardless of the platform or programming language.

Because they incorporate design decisions and conveys an intent of use. This eliminates a lot of time looking up specs and creates a universal element that can be adjusted across the design as well. Design tokens are platform-agnostic, meaning that you have created a common design language that can be deployed anywhere without having to make platform-specific adjustments. Specifications are universal between devices and platforms and implementations.

The usefulness of tokens really becomes apparent when you start moving through the levels. Design tokens can be exported in various formats, such as JSON or YAML, and integrated into development workflows and tools. This makes it easy for developers to access and use the tokens in their code, ensuring consistency and reducing the risk of errors.

“It’s a really modern house, yet it uses ancient forms,” said Michael Wyetzner, architect at Michielli + Wyetzner Architects, in the newest episode of Blueprints, a YouTube series for AD. In the video, Wyetzner breaks down the Ennis House’s role in House on Haunted Hill, as well as the role of five other properties featured in horror films. “It doesn’t have a very domestic scale, it almost looks like it could be a museum or other type of religious building,” he said. The film was remade as the 1999 film House on Haunted Hill, which had a 2007 sequel titled Return to House on Haunted Hill. The 1999 film was released to negative reviews but was a box office success, while the 2007 sequel was direct-to-video and widely panned. Lorimar Productions released the film on VHS cassette on CBS/Fox Video's Key Video in October 1985.

It’s said that industrialist and eventual owner Griffith J. Griffith donated the property to the city to rid himself of the tainted land (the ostriches on his ostrich farm there apparently stampeded at night). The land is supposedly haunted by Don Antonio Feliz, Dona Petronilla, Griffith J. Griffith, a young girl, and several others, as well as some kind of humanoid beast. The 6,000 square foot house, with four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms, is located in Los Angeles’ Los Feliz neighborhood, and it was built in 1924 by Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright. The house is highly unique both inside and out, with the exterior being featured in House on Haunted Hill and the interior playing the role of Deckard’s apartment in Blade Runner.

Full Cast & Crew

With the Idol and its power gone from the building, the ghosts were freed from Baphomet's will and crossed over, and the facility came unsealed. The Institute was built by the grandfather of Watson Pritchett, and was run by Dr. Richard B. Vannacutt. At some point, when Dr. Vannacutt discovered the Baphomet Idol and was corrupted by its evil, he hid the Idol in the heart of the house; a chamber the entrance to which was hidden at the back of one of the furnaces in the asylum's crematorium.

The door to this room is located near the stairs that lead up from the basement to the lobby. The desks and desk lamp in it would suggest that it was originally a study. This room is apparently where The Darkness is imprisoned, and disturbing the room will release it. The Darkness assimilated Evelyn, Pritchett and Steven, and tried to absorb Sara and Eddie as well.

Kyle and Desmond and his team were all killed by the ghosts one by one, while Paul, Ariel and Hammer avoided the ghosts and searched for a way out. Through visions the ghosts showed her, Ariel realized that the group needed to remove the Baphomet Idol to escape. Having been told by Ariel's visions where the Baphomet Idol was, Ariel, Paul and Hammer were able to make their way into the Heart of the House, where they found the Idol. Ariel removed it and took it to the asylum's washrooms to throw it down a drain and expel it from the house. The Silent Movie Theatre is said to be haunted by the ghosts of its first two owners. John Hampton opened the theater in 1942 and dedicated his life to preserving silent films… using toxic chemicals that eventually gave him cancer.

It’s always fun to imagine living inside of an iconic horror movie house, which is why we always like to report on such locations going up for grabs. The latest, brought to our attention by Variety, is the mansion from William Castle’s original House on Haunted Hill, which was actually also featured in Blade Runner. House on Haunted Hill was the first film produced by American production company Dark Castle Entertainment. Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis had discussed remaking William Castle's 1959 film as early as 1997. Director William Malone was a fan of the original film, which he had seen in his childhood, which served as the impetus for his directing. Malone and producer Dick Beebe worked on the film's screenplay for a year and a half.

Price, protected by a bulletproof vest and posing as dead, attacks Evelyn. As they scuffle, Evelyn is thrown through a decaying door, revealing the evil entity of the house – The Darkness. Evelyn seemingly dies in front of the others, strapped to an electroshock therapy table. Price pulls a gun on the guests, demanding to know who killed his wife.

The asylum's attic is located at the top of the building, and can be accessed by a flight of stairs in the lobby. There are also several switches and levers for controlling the facility's lockdown in the attic. Despite the attempts of the Idol, Vannacutt and the other ghosts to stop Ariel, she was able to drop the Idol down the drain and into the sewer, removing it from the house.

The old asylum's staff used the pool to perform hydrotherapy on patients, but the patients usually drowned in the pool. This room is an isolated, inescapable room where, during Vannacutt's reign of terror, patients would be put in the room alone in the dark, most likely to starve to death. There is no way in or out of the room (except for smashing through the wall), as patients were put inside by building the room's fourth wall in front of them. This room is an isolated, decayed, almost empty room, which can be accessed through an old, decaying door.

The ghosts reactivated the facility's lockdown, and while Paul, Kyle, Dr. Hammer and Desmond's team were sealed inside, Ariel was able to escape at the last second. It is unknown why the house trapped Desmond and his team inside, but it was most likely in case they succeeded in finding the Idol and took it. Evelyn Stockard-Price (Famke Janssen), a spoiled trophy wife, is in a disintegrating marriage with Steven H. Price (Geoffrey Rush), an amusement park mogul with a wicked sense of humor, each of whom would gladly kill the other. Evelyn fancies spectacular parties, and Steven leases the house from the owner, Watson Pritchett (Chris Kattan), for Evelyn's Halloween birthday bash. Evelyn gives Steven a guest list two pages long; he shreds it to spite her and then creates one of his own. Despite this, Price continues the party's theme, offering $1 million to each one who stays in the house and survives until morning, with any person not making it having his money added to the pot.

The gimmick this time, Emergo, had a plastic skeleton trundled out from behind the screen over the heads of the audience. Located in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles, Wright designed the home in the early ’20s for Charles and Mabel Ennis, owners of a local men’s clothing store. The home is one of four that makes use of Wright’s textile block system, which is constructed from precast, interlocked concrete blocks.

Leaping to the rope of the chapel bell, they swung it back and forth, tolling out the mournful message that the padre was dead. The grand old department store (now a Southwest Law School building) is supposedly haunted by a little girl who was killed in an elevator shaft. There are also the usual lights going on and off and mysterious footsteps. The 1906 Alexandria, now low-income apartments, has been both one of the fanciest joints in Downtown and a rundown flophouse. Several dancers are said to haunt the second-floor ballroom, an angry teenager hangs around Charlie Chaplin's old suite, and Rudolph Valentino apparently leaves the Knickerbocker occasionally and visits his old 12th-floor suite. The basement, which is filled with tunnels, is supposedly haunted by a couple of mobsters, at least one of whom also likes to visit the Comedy Store.

As The Darkness prepares to assimilate Eddie, he reveals that he is adopted and not a true descendant of the original staff. The Darkness is distracted by Pritchett long enough for Eddie to escape. Pritchett's ghost and The Darkness fade away as Sara and Eddie watch the sun rise. They find an envelope on a ledge, containing all five checks, made out to cash. They are relieved to have escaped and won the money but are stuck on the roof of the house, unsure of how to get down.

A cultured stone siding is another alternative you can choose rather than going for expensive full stone siding. To check out if this is the best option, here are the advantages and disadvantages of using faux stone siding. Here are some of the benefits you can be sure to enjoy with gneiss stone siding. Quartzite can be used for manufactured masonry siding or masonry cladding.

They also come in a variety of colors and textures, allowing for creative design options that can be tailored to individual tastes. Stone houses have become increasingly popular due to their attractive appearance and lasting quality. Well-built stone homes typically last upwards of 100 years, according to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors. There are, however, certain environmental factors that can prematurely reduce the structural integrity of stone houses, especially if the masonry isn’t properly maintained. Building with stone is an extremely time-consuming and labor-intensive activity that requires expert working knowledge of the material itself. As such, stone houses are typically built by highly skilled stonemasons rather than teams of contractors, which can drastically increase both the overall construction time and costs.

Masonry veneers are understandably more affordable than natural stone siding. The decision is up to you and to give you an idea of what you can explore, these are some of the designs of exterior stone sidings you can find. One of the siding options you can choose that’s not a natural stone is vinyl stone siding. This particular siding is reinforced by fiber cement, stucco, composite wood, or steel, depending on what you want. Onyx masonry siding will transform the exterior of your home into a beautiful work of art dominated by fine grains and dark colors. Another option is veneer masonry siding or faux stonework siding, which is created by using various synthetic materials with masonry aggregates then applying the pieces to a panel system, making it easier to install.

Natural Stone vs. Architectural Stone Veneer

It is best to consult a building contractor or engineer if you need help deciding how many stones should be used for your project. When building a stone house, it is important to choose the right type of stones for the job. Natural stones, such as granite and limestone are excellent choices for walls since they are durable and resist weathering, but may be expensive depending on where you get them from.

Finally, castle stone siding is the last example you can explore and consider using in your home’s exterior. With its foundation rooted in the legendary European precision cut stones, castle stone siding carries beautiful color palettes. This color patterns range from light gold and subtle lilac to deep burgundies and have standard sizes of 8 inches and 10 inches. This simply refers to the popular trend of stacking stones in order to add texture to the surface vertically. If you feel like your home’s exterior needs a bit of texture, this might be a good option to consider.

Its natural grain and texture invokes a rustic vibe and creates an inviting, organic look that adds character and charm to any home. The enduring appeal of stone lies not only in its robust physical properties but also in the symbolism it carries. Ancient civilizations recognized the inherent strength of stone, attributing it to divine qualities and using it to construct sacred temples and tombs that have withstood the test of millennia.

Planning and Designing

Good building stone can be found most anywhere, usually free for the gathering. We built our 1,100-square-foot home with 18 pickup loads of free boulders, most of which were gathered from a single field about a mile from our construction site. The rancher who owned the land was delighted to have his field cleared of “all them blankety-blank, machinery-bustin’ rocks.” Similar rancher/farmer/ landowner situations exist all over the country. You can lay tree branches across the roof, going one direction, and fill in the gaps with mortar.

One of the ways you can add stacked stone siding to the exterior of your home is to transform it into an accent wall, whether you install it in the chimney, on the columns, or even around the front door. The dimensions are more installation-friendly and they have seamless look that makes your home’s exterior look cleaner and smooth. This siding can also imitate the look of stunning natural stones but also takes out other challenges you may experience if you choose the authentic version like its weight and expensive cost.

When planning out how long it will take to build your stone house, there are a few things to consider. First, the amount of labor that is needed and how long it will take workers to complete each task. It must be obtained, cut to size, and then transported onto the site where it can be laid. All of these factors should be taken into account when estimating a time frame for completion. Stone walls require significantly less maintenance than other materials like wood or brick, meaning they remain strong and stable with minimal upkeep over time.

Your Guide to Home Exterior Stone: Types, Styles, and Materials

Opting for travertine on the exterior of a house is a choice that infuses a sense of casual elegance into your home’s façade. Travertine, a type of sedimentary rock, stands out for its distinctive porous texture and light color palette, making it an exceptional choice for those seeking both sophistication and a relaxed, natural ambiance. Combining bricks and stones on the exterior of a house is an architectural strategy that marries the warmth of brick with the elegance of stone. One of the most captivating aspects of cobblestone is its historic and timeless appeal. Its unique, rustic appearance lends a sense of nostalgia and Old World charm to any home exterior.

Outside, volcanic stone covers the service area and clads the foundation, giving the appearance that the house itself is rising out of an ancient lava flow. Of course, the high upfront costs of stone homes are almost always justified by their incredible durability and extremely long lifespans. Despite their many benefits, stone homes aren’t without their flaws, either—fortunately, these cons can, for the most part, be easily avoided or are ultimately worth it in the long run. Generally speaking, the benefits of stone homes significantly outweigh their disadvantages—something that should come as no surprise given their everlasting popularity.

Are there any environmental considerations when building a stone house?

Explore the advantages you can experience if you choose composite stone siding for the exterior of your home. Manufactured or cultured stone is an alternative to natural stone siding. It is a man-made composite of various elements, primarily Portland cement, as well as lightweight stone aggregates and pigments. The mix then sets in casts designed to mimic natural stones like sandstone, granite, and limestone. Yes, you can paint your exterior masonry cladding, especially if it’s already outdated and looks weathered.

Manufactured Stone Exterior Options

Comprised of other stones like feldspar, mica, and quartz, granite comes in many different colors and textures. Granite is common on the exterior of Colonial, European, and Craftsman style homes. In this guide, we’ll review all of the many different types of stone for a home’s exterior, and a complete list of styles available, so you have a better idea of what works best for you and your stone exterior home. More and more homeowners have transformed their houses with a stone exterior, and it’s only natural given the stone’s sense of permanence and durability. Although Occidental College relocated to the nearby Eagle Rock neighborhood in 1912, a series of landmarked homes, including this one, are part of an area originally known as Professors’ Row.

Pros & Cons of Stone Homes

Rather than the natural masonry siding, you can also choose the more affordable option which is faux masonrysiding. Compared to its natural counterpart, faux stone siding is popular and appealing to many homeowners because of this aspect. It is created by mixing together natural aggregates, cement, and pigments which transform into believable natural-looking stone pieces.

However, they tend to provide a less realistic look than polyurethane or manufactured stone options. Water and extreme temperatures won’t affect vinyl siding, and they are less prone to impact damage. As an alternative to natural stone, manufactured stone is lightweight and inexpensive while still providing insulation, protection, and a beautiful appearance. Like limestone, sandstone is a sedimentary rock that is versatile and durable.

You may want to consult with an architect or professional builder to ensure your plans align with local regulations and building codes. This is a view of the back of the house with stone exterior walls complemented by the wooden deck walkway that leads to a sunken conversation pit with a fire pit in the middle for warmth. Stone houses can outlive their occupants and even last several lifetimes. Finally, stone homes have excellent insulation properties which helps keep energy costs down if you’re looking for a more efficient way to heat and cool your home.

Adding exterior wall cladding is one of the best ways to spruce up and upgrade your home . If you have the budget and time to make changes and improvements, consider this element to your home to increase your home’s value and, at the same time, its aesthetics. Mimicking the smooth, rounded rocks found in river beds, river rock veneer provides a rustic, organic look for a home or cabin.

If your wall veneer is made from porous natural stones, make sure to avoid ruining them by painting them carefully. Upgrading your home’s exterior with natural types of exterior house masonry sidings will require you to get to know the options laid out before you. There’s huge importance given to your choice of materials since it will dictate many of the features you get to either enjoy or suffer from your masonry siding. These are the types of exterior masonry cladding, including what it is, pictures, different materials, advantages & disadvantages, and stone siding designs. There are many steps involved in the process, from laying the foundation to choosing the right stones for the walls.

Limestone, a popular choice for exterior cladding, brings timeless elegance and durability to the façade of a house. With a broad spectrum of colors ranging from creamy whites and soft beiges to warm earthy tones, limestone complements various architectural styles, from modern to traditional. Its smooth texture finish exudes sophistication and can lend a sense of grandeur to a home’s exterior. When it comes to enhancing the exterior aesthetics and durability of your home, the selection of the right stone can make all the difference. Various types of stone siding options offer homeowners unique characteristics, textures, and colors to suit your design preferences and practical needs.

The world of exterior stone options is as diverse as the architectural designs it adorns. From the enduring elegance of granite to the rustic charm of fieldstone, each stone type brings its own unique character and practical advantages to the table. Which one you choose for your project is the starting point to achieve your vision, whether that’s a modern, timeless, or rustic look. Bricks, with their earthy tones and uniform shapes, provide a warm and inviting backdrop. They create a sense of tradition and coziness while offering excellent insulation and low maintenance.

Employing stone on the exterior of a home is a strategic investment that can significantly boost property value. The timeless elegance of stone adds to the curb appeal and can even boost the energy efficiency of a home making it a more valuable and sought after property with higher resale value. Beyond its visual appeal, fieldstone is celebrated for its accessibility and durability. It can withstand the elements and age gracefully, developing a charming patina over time. Its rustic, unrefined appearance complements natural landscapes, making it an excellent choice for homes nestled in scenic settings.

Ultimately, it’s important to understand the properties of each type of stone before making your decision. Also keep in mind that some stones may require additional support measures such as steel reinforcement bars or concrete mortar when building a structure with them. Building a stone house may seem like a great idea, but it also has its drawbacks. Building a stone house requires that you source and transport stones from somewhere else, which can be costly and time-consuming. Also, setting up the stones in place for the walls requires skill and expertise and this costs money as well. The natural beauty of stone walls is difficult to replicate, giving homes a timeless look that will never go out of style.

One person was also arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, Muniz said. "The university is a private campus and the group had been violating some of their orders. It was a trespass at that point and we assisted with the arrests," Los Angeles Police Captain Kelly Muniz said during a briefing. The Los Angeles Police Department said 93 people were arrested on suspicion of trespassing during Wednesday's demonstrations at the University of Southern California. Vacancy rates are rising in the luxury apartment market in Los Angeles County, and it’s taking longer to lease those units, according to CoStar data. The visit came as college campuses continue to be roiled by protests and tensions related to the Israel-Hamas war. Many of the protesters are demanding universities to divest financial holdings in Israel. At Columbia, demonstrators have taken over a portion of the New York City campus, creating an encampment. Johnson, who also met with Jewish students before his remarks, said he planned to call President Biden later Wednesday to urge him to take action, adding that the National Guard may need to be deployed. Sunday's conversation was Biden and Netanyahu's first phone call since April 4, when Biden spoke with Netanyahu after an Israeli airstrike killed seven World Central Kitchen humanitarian workers.

The city has had to return some voucher money to the federal government, frustrating officials. Bass has said that she initially expected Inside Safe participants to spend three to six months in temporary housing, only to realize that, for many, those stays would last one to two years because of a dearth of affordable housing. And city taxpayers of all income levels have already funded billions of dollars in spending to reduce homelessness, even as the population on the streets and in temporary housing has continued to increase. Philanthropic and real estate leaders reacted with hope and skepticism to the initiative, LA4LA, which Bass unveiled Monday during her State of the City address.

The demand for house calls is increasing because of the aging U.S. population, an increase in patients who are homebound, and the acknowledgment of the value of house calls by the public and health care industry. Literature from current U.S. home-based primary care programs describes health care cost savings and improved patient outcomes for older adults and other vulnerable populations. Common indications for house calls are management of acute or chronic illnesses, coordination of a post-hospitalization transition of care, health assessments, and end-of-life care. House calls may also include observation of activities of daily living, medication reconciliation, nutrition assessment, evaluation of primary caregiver stress, and the evaluation of patient safety in the home. Physicians can use the INHOMESSS mnemonic (impairments/immobility, nutrition, home environment, other people, medications, examination, safety, spiritual health, services) as a checklist for providing a comprehensive health assessment. Every visit includes a physical, tailored recommendations on health care screenings and plenty of time to ask questions that matter to you. They disguise themselves as elderly people and proceed to secretly pull pranks on the elders like Pop-Pop sitting on a whoopee cushion, a squirt flower spraying water onto Gayle, and having the pudding machine malfunction on Scoots, all while they tell them that those pranks were set up by Luan. Angered over getting pranked, the elders suggest firing Luan from performing, but Pop-Pop argues back that she wouldn't stoop to that low, since he's her grandfather, but after getting a pie to the face (courtesy of Lincoln), Pop-Pop immediately changes his mind and says that Luan must be fired from performing. Back at the Loud House, Lisa announces that she's created a sharkodile repellent for them to use. Lincoln questions if it's safe to use, at which point he accidentally sprays it in Lynn Sr.'s face, causing the family patriarch to act loopy for the next hour or so.

At Fairway University, Lori receives the delivery, and opens it up to see her father's figgy pudding, where it reminds her too much of home and realizes she's making a mistake by not being with them for the holidays. Calling up Bobby, Lori asks him to drop her off in Royal Woods, but Bobby says that the mercado van isn't working, but realize that he can still drop her off with the mercado's moped. Lincoln and his best friend Clyde make a plan on how to get the family together for Christmas. They make Lori homesick, fool Luna into thinking that Mick wants to jam with her, build a Sharkodile out of Clyde's family's film props, and disguise themselves as elderly people at the Sunset Canyon Retirement Home to pull off pranks enough for Pop-Pop to cancel Luan's gig. Later on, while getting ready for the tree-lighting ceremony, Lincoln finds that he only made things worse for the family, having accidentally sprayed Lisa's custom-built Sharkodile repellent on Lynn Sr. causing him to not see straight, lose balance, and have unintelligible speech. The Loud House's portrayal of interracial gay married couple Howard and Harold McBride led the series to be nominated for Outstanding Individual Episode at the 28th GLAAD Media Awards and for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming at the 29th, 31st, 32nd and 35th GLAAD Media Awards.

It is set in a fictional town in southeastern Michigan called Royal Woods, based on Savino's hometown of Royal Oak. The series was pitched to the network in 2013 as a two-minute short film entered in the annual Animated Shorts Program. It entered production the following year.[3] The series is based on Savino's own childhood growing up in a large family, and its animation is largely influenced by newspaper comic strips. The Loud House debuted on Nickelodeon in May 2016 and centers on 11-year-old Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters as he gives an inside look at what it takes to survive the chaos of a huge family. One of the longest-running animated series on Nickelodeon with 156 episodes, the property has also been translated into a comic book series, which continues to roll out new stories; chapter books; a digital album; and a podcast, Listen Out Loud. With Luan taken care of, Lincoln and Clyde get to work on their video with the sharkodile. After filming the scenes they need, Clyde, after altering the footage to make the scenes look more convincing, sends the footage to Katherine Mulligan and broadcasts it on the news, to which the Louds watch. After Lincoln excuses himself to get dressed, he calls up Clyde to tell him that the plan succeeded.

Right after Rita leaves, the family sees Katherine Mulligan reporting on the news that the sharkodile is now in Royal Woods, according to video footage captured by Scoots when Lincoln and Clyde tried to hide it in the woods earlier in the day. Katherine says that with the sharkodile lurking about, all of Royal Woods is being placed under a curfew, and the tree-lighting ceremony is cancelled. Seeing Lily heartbroken that she won't get to light the tree proves to be the final crushing blow for Lincoln, and he calls Katherine to tell her that the sharkodile was just a hoax he created. Lincoln is at first pleased that his plan has worked, but after he has dressed himself up for the tree-lighting ceremony, he soon sees that his sisters are all miserable as a result of his actions. Leni is in creative distress without Tanya, and even worse, she's been fired from her job (again); Luna is heartbroken because Sam broke up with her due to her taking the chance to see Mick Swagger; Luan is upset that their Pop-Pop fired her for seemingly no reason and is considering giving up comedy (again); and Lynn Jr., Lola, and Lana are all sad about not getting to do the activities they were looking forward to doing in Miami. Likewise, Lynn Sr. and Rita are also sad about having to cancel the trip, saying they may not get another chance for a vacation like this until they've retired.

Leni, Lynn Jr., Lucy, Lana, Lola, Lisa, and Lily agree to this, but Lincoln protests, not wanting to skip out on their usual holiday traditions. He tries to convince them otherwise by showing them his new 13-person toboggan, saying he was hoping they could all ride it down the big hill at Tall Timbers Park together; unfortunately, the sled is broken, and there's no snow expected to fall in Royal Woods this year. The Loud House is an American animated television series created by Chris Savino that premiered on Nickelodeon on May 2, 2016. The series revolves around the chaotic everyday life of a boy named Lincoln Loud, who is the middle child and only son in a large family of 11 children.

However, Rip Hardcore sees the "sharkodile" lurching through the woods and gives chase after "it". Lincoln and Clyde try to take a shortcut through Franklin Avenue, inadvertently snagging and taking down the decorations from Lincoln's house. When the sisters see the "sharkodile" passing through their yard, Lisa also runs out after it, wanting to capture the creature and study it for science. The other Loud sisters, realizing Lisa could be in danger if she tries this, rush out after her, accompanied by their father just as he's regaining consciousness. On Christmas Eve, the Louds watch the local news and see Katherine Mulligan reporting about the sharkodile attack in Miami, showing the "footage" that Lincoln and Clyde sent her.

When the sisters see the "sharkodile" passing through their yard, Lisa begins to chase after it, wanting to capture the creature and study it for science. Lynn Sr., having gotten over the effects of the sharkodile tranquilizer, proceeds to give chase as well. The series premiered on May 15, 2016, in the Middle East and North Africa on Nickelodeon, dubbed in Gulf Arabic. Production for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, Co-Heads of Nickelodeon & Awesomeness Live-Action. A Loud House Christmas will also feature additional fan-favorite characters from the animated The Loud House series.

He has been sentenced to 300 hours of community service due to the property damage he caused; but on the upside, Luna and Sam have gotten back together and are going to go on their ski trip after all, Leni has been rehired at Reininger's and gotten her creative spark back, Luan has reconciled with Pop-Pop and has been re-booked for her Sunset Canyon gig, and the family's going to go to Miami after all. Lincoln's parents and sisters then surprise him by revealing that they fixed up the giant toboggan, and thanks to some cloud-seeding, Lisa manages to make it snow above their house. The movie ends on the Louds and Clyde riding the big toboggan down the hill at Tall Timbers Park.

At Clyde's house, Lincoln gets a phone call from Lori telling him that she'll be coming home. After hanging up, Lincoln explains that all that's left to do in their plan is to stop Luan from doing her comedy fest, and try to convince the Louds not to go to Miami. Using props in the McBrides' theater workshop, Lincoln and Clyde need on making a creature so scary, that his family will be convinced that it's not safe to be on land or sea. Using the head of a shark and the back half of a crocodile, they settle on the creature being a "sharkodile", while being powered by the McBrides' tandem bicycle. When it comes to a victim needing to be "attacked", they settle on a mannequin Leni likes to converse with at Reininger's called Tanya.

With help from Lisa's successful experiment, Lincoln, his sisters, his parents, and Clyde have a snowball fight. A spin-off, entitled The Casagrandes, was put into development by Nickelodeon in March 2018. The film spun off a live-action series, titled The Really Loud House and utilizing much of the same cast, which was announced for Paramount+ on March 24, 2022 and premiered on Nickelodeon in November 2022. Nick has also extended the first season of All That by 10 episodes, bringing its total to 36, and renewed The Casagrandes (season two), Blues Clues and You (season three), Paw Patrol (season eight), Blaze and the Monster Machines (season six), Bubble Guppies (season six), holiday competition Top Elf (season two) and anthology Are You Afraid of the Dark? It’s also set a Feb. 29 premiere date for Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, starring the 10-year-old rapper. The graphic novels are by either crew members or other incoming artists, and dive into the world of the show and the characters within.
